London with the Russians

By Mark

Every year I help organise a customer event for up to 40 Russian customers, this year it was taking place in London, over the four days we visited the Shard, Planet Hollywood, Madame Tussauds, Sherlock Holmes Museum, Tate Britain culminating with an award ceremony onboard HMS Belfast.

Wednesday 26th February

Caught the train from Wrexham at 09.00 changed at Chester and got to London around 11.40, after a short underground trip I checked into our hotel, the Doubletree by Hilton Westminster. We then started to add all the gifts to our guest’s rooms.

I had a spare hour before they arrived so I went around the corner to the Tate Britain for a walk around.

We then greeted all our guests and helped them check into their room, we then had a meal at the hotel followed by a late night walk around the local area past Westminster, Big Ben, etc followed by a couple of drinks in a pub.

Thursday 27th February

After breakfast we started the day with a bus tour around the Capital passing such attractions as Whitehall, Trafalgar Sq, Piccadilly, Hyde Park Corner, Knightsbridge, Westminster Bridge, Waterloo Bridge and St Paul’s with photo stops at Buckingham Palace and Tower Bridge.

We then visited The Shard and went right to the top to the viewing platform on Level 72 where you could see down over the City.

From here we had lunch at Planet Hollywood in Piccadilly surrounded by all the movie memorabilia on the walls, I booked out the British Room for our private dining and it had a Union Jack carpet and a mezzanine that overlooked the restaurant. My particular favourite movie prop was Han Solo frozen in Carbonate from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.

We then went for a walk around Piccadilly Circus before getting on the tube and heading over to Baker Street for a visit to the Sherlock Holmes Museum.

The museum was quite small and we had to wait a while to get in because they had to limit the numbers in the building. After a quick walk around I needed to leave the group and head back to the hotel to grab some stuff to then head over to our headquarters at Millbank to set up the room for our evening meal and presentations.

After the meal we went over to Covent Garden to a Nightclub called Road House and got back to the hotel very late.

Friday 28th February

This morning they had free time to do what they wanted, I took a group to Emirates Stadium for a tour and then a smaller group to Madame Tussauds.

The four girls I took to Madame Tussauds where great and we all had a good time there, despite their very little English and my non-existent Russian. After which we went to a pub for a couple of drinks.

After a short rest at the hotel I headed over to HMS Belfast to ensure it was set up correctly for our evening awards, it is a great ship that is now a museum, we had booked the place out so as well as a meal we could roam around the place.

When the evening was over we headed over to Leicester Square to go to another NightClub were we stayed until 3am getting back to the hotel around 3.30.

Saturday 1st March

Reasonably early breakfast then said good bye to our new Russian friends as they got on the bus to the airport. I then packed my bags and got the train back home.
