The Best Free Walking Tour of Rome

Rome is one of the most fascinating cities in the world, with a rich history and culture that dates back thousands of years. Our guide, Marcello from Great Times Tours, met us at Circus Maximux, one of the most ancient parts of the city. From there, we began our journey through some of Rome’s most iconic sites. Marcello was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the city’s history, and he provided us with interesting facts and insights throughout the tour.

As we made our way through the city, we visited various landmarks, including the Aventine Hill, Palatine Hill, and the Basilica S.Maria in Cosmedin. One of the most unique sites we saw was the Mouth of Truth, an ancient marble disc that supposedly bites off the hand of liars. It was fun to take pictures with it, although we were careful not to test its legend!
 
Another fascinating location was the Forum Boarium, an ancient marketplace filled with stunning ruins and artifacts. We learned about the history of the marketplace and how it was once used for trading livestock and other goods. The Janus Arch, an impressive double archway that served as a gateway to the ancient city, was another highlight of the tour.

One of the most beautiful sites we visited was the Hercules Temple, with its impressive columns and arches. We also enjoyed crossing the Tiber River to reach the Tiberina Island, a small and charming island in the heart of Rome. Marcello shared with us some interesting stories about the island, including how it was once believed to be a sacred site.
 
As we continued our tour, we visited the Jewish Ghetto and the Synagogue of Rome, two important landmarks that represent the rich history and culture of the Jewish community in Rome. We also saw Octavia’s Porticus, a stunning colonnade that dates to ancient Roman times, and the Temple of Apollo, a beautiful ancient temple dedicated to the god of music and poetry.

Our tour concluded at the Marcellus Theater, an ancient theater that could seat up to 10,000 people and was once used for plays, games, and other events. It was a fitting end to a tour that had taken us through the history of Rome, from its ancient beginnings to its more recent past.
