Route 66 Day Nine

By Mark

Tulsa – Amarillo

The usual breakfast again today, bagels and cream cheese, we just can’t stomach the awful scrambled eggs, biscuits, gravy and skanky bacon that these places offer.

After we check out we double back on ourselves as it occurred to me last night that we missed the famous “Blue Whale”. I was only four miles back from our hotel so we did not need to travel far. The Blue Whale has become one of the most recognizable attractions on old Route 66 in Oklahoma. Hugh Davis built it in the early 1970s as an anniversary gift to his wife Zelta. The Blue Whale and its pond became a favourite stop and swimming hole for both locals and travellers alike, but looking at the water now I would not even dip my toe in it.

We then continue along Route 66 passing through more towns like before and crossing over old fashioned bridges until we come to Oklahoma City, this is where the sat nav went a bit crazy and sent us round in circles a few times, but we did get to see the Capital Building (four times).

After some fiddling about with the sat nav I set the location to Clinton. Clinton houses the Route 66 Museum so we stopped off there for a few minutes to take a look around.

After Clinton we decided that we wanted to try and make it to Amarillo before nightfall so we mixed up driving on Route 66 with Interstate 40. It did not take long before we made it to Texas, the sixth state we have been in so far.

We arrived in Amarillo just after 7pm and checked into our hotel the Holiday Inn Express. We then went to the Big Texan Steakhouse. This is something I have wanted to do since first planning this trip, you can order a 72oz steak and if you eat it all (with all the trimmings) you don’t have to pay, unfortunately Sarah would not let me attempt it!!!!

When we arrive it is very busy and we have to wait 45 minutes until we get a table. I have a 20oz T-bone and to be honest is was quite disappointing, it was very dry and bland with no discernable taste, I guess the actual product does not live up to the hype.

We take some photos around the place and look around the gift shop before returning back to the hotel for the night.
