An Evening with Sir Roger Moore

By Mark

Roger Moore has always been my favourite Bond, probably because he is the one I grew up watching. I know that most people would say Sean Connery but he is way down the list in my opinion after Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan.

Anyway, I used to frequent Malvern Theatre quite often and always receive their newsletter updates for upcoming performances. A few months ago I received their latest for this season and it included “An Evening with Sir Roger Moore”. So I booked a ticket.

It took around two and a half hours to get to Malvern and I was there in plenty of time (17.30 for a 19.30 performance). So I decided to wait at the stage door to try and get him to sign his book and photograph. Unfortunately he decided to get dropped off by the side door to avoid the small group of fans who were waiting for him.

The talk itself was great and lasted over two hours with an intermission in the middle. The first half was about Sir Rogers early career and childhood and the latter part about the 007 movies and his work as a UNICEF Ambassador.

I found it very interesting and some of the things he mentioned was:

  • Tony Curtis smoking a joint outside of Number 10 Downing Street having his picture taken between two Police Men.
  • His favourite Bond gadget being the magnetic watch.
  • How a prop man had to be positioned under Madeline Smiths dress to unzip it with the magnetic watch.
  • Hi favourite line was “sit” during a tiger seen in Octopussy.
  • The favourite of his Bond movies was “The Spy Who Loved Me”.
  • The favourite of his movies was “The Man Who Haunted Himself” as he said he was allowed to act during that movie.
  • He tried to by the rights to “The Saint” long before he was offered a part in it.

He also answered a number of questions from the audience which included the Director of UNICEF and a script supervisor from some of this past films.

After the evening had finished I went again to the stage door in a hope he would come out that way and hopefully sign and get a photograph with him, unfortunately he left through a side door again and ignored the small group of fans who were waiting outside.
